Batman 3 Plot Rumours

I heard this on the radio yesterday, but I didn't get around to looking it up until just a few moments ago. This link includes some information--it is unverified, and therefore may not be true, but it is still interesting nonetheless.

I am pretty happy that there will likely be another Batman movie. Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale have done such great things for the franchise, and Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight are my two favourite comic book movies. I'm a sucker for comic book movies; they're generally good fun, but Nolan really took a leap and set a high standard for the other comic book franchises out there. Plus, The Dark Knight ended on such a downer note (at least for me, the first time I saw it in theatres I was crying at the end, and as the lights came up everyone turned to stare at me) that I want to see what happens next. Maybe this next one will end on a slightly happier note? One can hope.

It's just such a shame Heath Ledger died in early 2008. From all that I've heard, Nolan had planned to include the Joker in Batman 3. Ledger was fantastic in the role-at times he genuinely terrified me, and it would have been amazing to see him reprise it. He was one of my favourite actors, and if you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, check it out immediately.

According to the article linked, it sounds as if they'll be getting Nolan involved in a Superman reboot as well. I don't know how I feel about this. I really liked the last Superman movie, but I'll admit to having never seen the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. I guess most people weren't impressed with it, if they're talking about rebooting the franchise only three and a half years after the original reboot came out. That being said, I strongly prefer Batman to Superman, and that seems to be a common trend among people I speak with. Is there anyone out there who disagrees with me? I love a good discussion on stuff like that. It's similar in vein to my favourite movie discussion question: Han Solo or Indiana Jones? I always say Indiana Jones, but most go with Han Solo.

I'll be interested in what Nolan does with the franchise though, and will definitely check it out in theatres if or when it comes out.

  1. The Dark Knight was great, although very long.
I actually HATED Batman Begins, I thought the Directing and Editing were awful.

Ledger was fantastic as The Joker although I hope he doesn't re-appear in any other future films for this franchise. Although Batman and The Joker are enemies and they are the biggest rivals in the Batman mythos, I just don't want to see another actor try to fill that role.

Brokeback Mountain by the way, is such a great movie I can't even tell you how much I like it. One of my favourite movies of all time.

  2. I don't want him to appear in any more movies because there's no way any other actor could be The Joker. They'd just be a pale imitation of the brilliance Ledger created. It's a shame because I would have loved to see Harley Quinn in the movies, but you can't really use her without The Joker..

I liked Batman Begins, but The Dark Knight was the better film. Katie Holmes annoyed me in Batman Begins.

  3. Well, there is a way you can bring about Harley without Joker, but it'l have to involve the idea of Joker as an offscreen Hannibal Lecter type figure, which isn't much of a stretch considering how Ledger portrayed him. With a good director and a good script, both of which would be present in Batman 3, they could definitely pull it off, using at most a voice.
As to Superman Returns, even liking the Reeve movies, I liked this one, but there seems to be a trend against the wholesome hero image that Superman embodies. People seem to prefer their heroes damaged, like Wolverine or Batman. If forced to choose between the two, however, I pick Superman because, well, lasers from his eyes. No amount of bat shark repellant can beat that.

  4. I've thought about using an off screen voice but even that doesn't seem right because they'd be mimicking Ledger's voicing. The character was all his and it just doesn't seem right to have someone take on the role, even off screen.

I do like my heroes to be damaged. I also particularly love bat shark repellent.

  5. Yeah I love Harley too. And it would be almost impossible to use her without The Joker corrupting her on screen. Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

Katie Holmes was awful, Maggie G was sooo much better. I was happy she died too, great plot forwarder.

The standout in TDK was Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was amazing. He was, for me, the best part of that movie and even eclipsed Ledger's Joker role.

  6. I was shocked when she died, I couldn't believe they'd killed off the love interest! After the fact, I loved that they'd done it though. Aaron Eckhart really was fantastic, I'd wondered about his casting, but he was perfect.

  7. If they were to wait til the middle of the decade I think they could get away with another actor as Joker. He would have to be amazing at it though. Huge shoes. Ive heard someone mention Daniel Day Lewis.

My perfect Batman 3 though would be waiting like 15 years and have Nolan come back and do Dark Knight Returns.

  8. Daniel Day Lewis would be great, but I'm convinced he's able to do anything. Maybe it could work if they waited another 5 years or so, but right now it's just too soon.

And while that would be cool, I'm selfish and just don't want to wait 15 years for another Batman movie.

  9. Christopher Nolan should be done with Batman, or I hope he will be...Memento is the best film noir of this decade...he's above the material as an artist.

  10. I think the Nolan Batman films have changed the super hero genre. It's taken more seriously, and when the genre is in capable hands like Nolan's, some serious art can be created. So I am okay with Nolan continuing work on the Batman franchise, as long as he does other work as well. And I agree: Memento is an amazing film. Been a few years since I've seen it, so I need to watch it again someday.
